E. H. Suydam’s original pencil illustrations of Honolulu, Kauai, and other locations in Hawaii capture the vibrancy of these places as they were in the late 1930s, before the changes brought on by World War II and the rapid growth in population. A noted artist of views, Suydam was best known for the illustrations he created for more than sixteen different books, most of which were published by the Appleton-Century Company. These evocative views of Hawaiian locations were models for Hawaii: Isles of Enchantment, a published collection of his pencil drawings, issued by Appleton-Century-Crofts. In them, Suydam captures the atmosphere and texture daily life with immediacy in his spontaneous, inimitable style of draftsmanship, a quality that was impossible to duplicate in the published series.st.
