Federal Serpentine-Front Sideboard
Probably New York, 1795-1810
Height 39 1/2 inches x Width 73 inches x Depth 26 inches

This sideboard is a fine example of American cabinetmaking of the Federal period. Influenced by the English styles of Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite, whose design pattern books were available in the newly-minted states, this six-legged piece exhibits a graceful, undulating facade punctuated by oval and circular banded panels and floral marquetry reserves, including icicle-shaped inlay. These patterns were used and shared by furniture makers throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, from Baltimore to New York City.

Provenance: John S. Walton, New York Rear Admiral Edward P. Moore and Barbara Bingham Moore
