From the start of the 18th century, cabinets and bookcases were added to the top of bureau and were produced in a range of contemporary styles.

A striking bureau bookcase of richly figured walnut with the original beveled mirror plates. The doors open to an oak interior of drawers and compartments. The book matched veneer slant front features a book rest and open to a finely detailed interior with six compartments, seven drawers and prospect door centering two document drawers. A well in the center contains a secret compartment with three removable boxes. The slant front is framed by cockbeading and the writing surface is inset with tooled leather. The four drawers in the bottom section, two short and two long, all are burl veneered with herringbone inlay and are outlined with cockbeading. The piece is raised on later bracket feet.
