Le Perroquet Mascarin Pt. 139

From: Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets

Paris 1801-5

Engraving with original hand color

Paper Dimension: 13 1/2 x 20

The head is covered with a kind of ash-gray chaperone, and the face is covered with a black mask extending over the front of the forehead from the eyes to the beak, descending on the sides of the mandibles and a little lower down the sides of the throat. The mantle is of a slightly earthy brown, and slightly darker than the sooty hue which reigns on the lower parts of the body, the tail of a dark brown is marked at its base. The Perroquet mascarin or Mascarin of Reunion, belonged to the family of Psittacidae and the genus Mascarinus. This endemic bird of Reunion Island has been extinct since the middle of the 18th century.
