More than 10,000 botanical prints and drawings, from the first printed herbals to the great flower books of the nineteenth century. Come and see them on Main Street in Saint Helena.
The collection
The explorers who charted the New World came home with seeds, bulbs and pressed specimens, and with the drawings of the artists who sailed with them. Gardens across Europe filled with plants no one had seen before, and botanists, engravers and colorists recorded them in some of the most beautiful books ever printed.
Our botanical inventory spans that whole history: the sixteenth-century herbals, the baroque florilegia, the golden age of Redouté and the orchid and water lily books of the Victorians. With more than 10,000 works, it is the largest botanical inventory in America, and most of it has never been online.
