The collection
Alongside the printed plates, the explorers and the artists who followed them made original paintings and drawings: field sketches, finished watercolors and studio oils of places most people would never see.
Our collection runs from natural history watercolors to the painters of the American West and nineteenth-century California, among them Albert Bierstadt, William Keith and Virgil Williams, whose view of a settlement in the Napa Valley was painted in 1885 near the town where our gallery now stands. It continues today with James Hart Dyke's paintings of Yosemite.
