Naturalists at the edge of the map
From the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, naturalists joined expeditions to the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and brought home animals that had never been described. They collected, sketched and published them, and the books they made are among the great achievements of art and science.
Maria Sibylla Merian painted the insects of Surinam; Mark Catesby, the birds and reptiles of the Carolinas; John James Audubon travelled the American frontier to paint every bird he could find, life-size; John Gould published the birds of Europe, Asia and Australia. Arader Galleries holds one of the world's largest privately held collections of natural history art, and our Saint Helena gallery brings a selection of it to California.
